There's a Light on in the Attic

For this prompt, each person in my writing groups had to start their piece with "There's a Light on in the Attic." We could do any type of writing that we wanted to do, so I chose to do a poem. It was really neat to hear everyone's responses because they were all so different:

There's a Light on in the Attic

There's a light on in the attic
Fear shoots down my legs to my toes
I creep down the hall
What awaits me... I do not know

There's a sound coming from the attic
A gust of air tickles my neck
I inch my way along the rug
I must, I have to, I need to check...

There's a shadow coming from the attic
Goosebumps prickle and poke my skin
The floor creaks softly as I step
My breath catches... my mind starts to spin...

There's someone in the attic!
I crawl up the ladder and shield my eyes
My knees knock with each wooden run climbed
Screeeeaaaam! Crash! Rattle! Bash!
Oh Dad! It's you! What a lovely surprise!
